Ruth's musings

I have been dealing with breast cancer for a while, and have been sharing my journey with friends, family, and prayer partners. This blog brings all my updates together in one place, and leaves me free to muse on other parts of my life. Thanks for visiting!

Matt and His Artistry

Matt did not have rehearsal on Halloween evening, so he had lots of time to play with his makeup.

First, he did himself:

Then, he worked on me:

Would you like some candy, little girl?

Most of the kids completely forgot their lines when they saw me.

We only had one little kid who absolutely refused to come to the door. One ran back for her mom. The one who refused apparently remembered Matt, the living scarecrow, from last year. I hope they won't be too disappointed next year when Matt will be busy making up everybody in his dorm, wherever he may be.

Happy Halloween!

Ruth Update: November 4, 2006

Dear Friends, Relatives, and Prayer Partners,

I have hair! Yes indeedy, I have little tiny hairs growing out of my scalp. I am not yet ready for prime time, but hair is definitely growing. My toes feel better, too, but still feel as if there is a long way to go. You know how when your foot "falls asleep," and it is just starting to come back and you have that semi-painful tingling? That is about how my toes feel when I wiggle them. It is not constant, but does make wearing a heel of any height an adventure.

Paul, meanwhile, is suffering from hip pain. We don't know what is causing it, but he is confident it will go away in a few days. This will be the third night he has not gone on his usual evening walk. I haven't gone into nagging wife mode yet. Well, not the full-bore nag, but I plan to encourage him to seek medical advice if there is no improvement in a few days. He felt pretty well this morning, so he went to work in the garden. Bad move.

What with Paul's pain and getting Matt on a bus to Richmond with his one-act play at 7:00 this morning, we completely forgot about a party to which we had been invited today. So sorry, Pete and Kathy. Can you ever forgive us? We had good intentions, really. I hope you had a Happy Birthday, Pete.

Matt had a fine time on Halloween. One of his specialties in theater is bloody makeup, and I had a terrific canvas for him. I will post photos on my blog. We got very few trick-or-treaters, darn it.

Thank you all for your good wishes and congratulations. It is nice to be able to answer "I'm in remission!" when people ask me how I am. My oncologist encourages me to keep my medi-port until we have two "clean" PET scans. The plan now is to see her every month, and get a PET scan every four months for a while, just to see what is going on. They will flush my medi-port on my office visits, which has to be done about that often for maintenance. It's also a good way to draw blood, and we will be watching that cancer marker, too.

Speaking of Matt's theater activity, "Anatomy of Gray" opens this week. Matt has a juicy role and he is enjoying it immensely. For times and tickets, please see the Lake Braddock Theater website at
http://www.lbtheatre.com/ I am told you can order tickets on line. Tony is to be here for the Saturday matinee, but I plan to see some of the other performances. Also, "The Capitol Steps" comedy troupe is coming to Lake Braddock Theater on November 19th. This is a fundraiser for LBT, and a good show, too, if you like topical political musical comedy. I have seen them before, and it is really great. There is a link to "Capitol Steps" at the website, too.

Get your mammograms. Do your self-exams.

Love,

Ruth
